Easy Five Ingredient Apple Pup Pies

Two French Bulldogs with mini apple pup pies

I highly recommend a good non-stick mini muffin tin for this recipe.  You can find my favorite here.  I use changed all my bakeware to this brand a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back since.  They are still just as non-stick today as the day I bought them.  And as much as I hate handwashing pans, they are super easy to clean.

So, let’s jump into the fun!  Gather up the up the five simple ingredients and let’s get started.  I picked 5 power packed ingredients to make an allergy friendly dog treat that was rated two paws up.  Today we are using coconut flour.  This flour is gluten free and hypoallergenic.  The coconut oil and egg are packed with protein to keep your dogs fuller longer.  The coconut flour, apples and cinnamon work together to help slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream making it a great choice for over-weight and diabetic dogs.  The cinnamon and coconut oil work together to help boost cognitive function and defend against neurological disorders.  As always, everything in moderation.  These are tasty treats designed for a special occasion.

Place apples, water and cinnamon into small saucepan. Cover and place on medium heat for 5 minutes stirring occasionally. Add coconut flour, stir in and cook for another 5 minutes, lightly mashing some of the apples while stirring.

Divide apples evenly between crusts and press down. Bake 8 minutes. Cool completely before removing from pan. Store up to 5 days in the fridge or up to 1 months in the freezer.  Bone appétit!

Apple picking is one of those quintessential fall activities that is not to be missed.  And the best part about apple picking is that so many apple orchards are dog friendly!  The weather took an early turn for the worst here with 6 inches of snow which unfortunately took apple picking off our to do list.  But last year we got to take the pups and it was such a fun experience.  It was a nice quiet day at the orchard and since we were far from the road, we took them off leash and they got to zoomie to their hearts content.  They were very happy with their situation in life!  As far as I’m concerned, any activity that we can take them to is our favorite activity.

This year we were relegated to using store bought apples but the pie making must go on!  Apple pies and crisps are one of my favorite desserts and I wanted to make a version that my pups could enjoy too.  So, after much research I came up with a healthy apple pup pie recipe full of healthy fats, protein and a naturally sweet filling.  While I prefer my crust full of gluten and butter there were two very happy pups that didn’t notice it was free of both.  And I must say the filling was still sweet and delicious even without the added sugars.

Ingredients

Crust

  • ½ cup Coconut Flour
  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil (in solid form)
  • 1 Egg
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon

Filling

  • 1 cup Apples peeled/diced 1/4 inch cubes. (approx. 1 lg or 2 sm)
  • 2 Tbsp Water
  • ¼ tsp Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp Coconut Flour

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly grease mini muffin pan with coconut oil.

Mix coconut flour, cinnamon and coconut oil (solid form) together.  For this I recommend a hand mixer or food processor.  Doing this by hand would make it pretty difficult to get everything fully combined.  Note:  If you are using a hand mixer it is helpful to stop and use the mixing attachments to mash into any stubborn lumps of coconut oil.  Once fully incorporated mix in egg.  Place about 1 ½ Tbsp dough into each mini muffin cups.  Makes roughly 16 pies.

Press dough into bottom/sides to form little cups.  You can do this several different ways.  If you happen to have a tart tamper in a mini muffin size that is your easiest option.  Otherwise you can easily do it with your fingers.  Note:  if using your fingers, I recommend covering them with a small snack or sandwich bag.  This helps you cover a bit more surface area at once and keeps the dough from attacking your fingernails.  Pierce with fork. Par bake the crust for 5 minutes or until edges just begin to brown.

Note:  If you have larger dogs and would like to make full muffin sized pies this will make roughly 6 pies.  You will still par bake the crust for 5 minutes but you should add an additional 3-5 minutes to baking with the filling.

These are higher calorie treats and have some saturated fats.  These are for special occasions and should not be used as a meal replacement as they are not nutritionally balanced for every day.

Here’s the moment you’ve been waiting for!  The taste test

As you can see there are two paws up all around and no crumb was left behind.
